Assistance Programs

A general overview of the types of energy and gas bill assistance that may be available. Programs, eligibility, and funding vary by state, utility provider, and time of year, so a phone call is the fastest way to find out what applies to you. FindEnergy Help does not administer any of these programs.

Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded, state-administered program that can help eligible households with heating and cooling costs. Applications are processed by state and local agencies, not by FindEnergy Help.

Gas Bill Help

Many gas utility providers offer hardship funds, one-time credits, or income-based discount rates for qualifying customers. Availability and requirements differ by provider and region.

Payment Options

If you're behind on a bill, providers often offer budget billing (which averages your annual usage into equal monthly payments) or short-term payment arrangements to help you catch up without service interruption.

Utility Rights

Utility customers generally have rights around disconnection notices, payment plan offers, and dispute processes. These protections vary by state and are typically enforced by your state's public utility commission.

Community Resources

Local nonprofits, community action agencies, and faith-based organizations sometimes offer one-time emergency utility grants, especially during extreme weather months.

Weatherization Assistance

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) helps eligible households reduce energy costs long-term through home efficiency improvements like insulation and furnace repair, administered through state agencies.

How the Process Generally Works

  1. 1 Call our representatives and describe your situation — which utility, what's past due, and any notices you've received.
  2. 2 We'll walk through the types of programs that commonly apply to households in similar situations and explain, in general terms, how each one tends to work.
  3. 3 You decide which option(s) to pursue and contact the relevant agency, nonprofit, or your utility provider directly to apply — we can help you find the right contact information.

FindEnergy Help does not decide eligibility, does not process applications, and does not disburse funds. Final decisions are always made by the agency, nonprofit, or utility company that administers the specific program.

Please note: Program names, availability, and eligibility rules change frequently and vary by state and provider. The overview above is general information, not a guarantee that any specific program is currently open, funded, or available in your area. Call for the most current guidance for your situation.
